Year 10 English – Looking to the HSC

Back

The Year 10 English classes have been completing a new unit for 2026 – Empowering Writing – which addresses developing composition skills in four text types – Discursive, Imaginative, Persuasive, and Reflective. Each text type contains a series learning activities that cast an eye towards a number of modules in Stage 6, including Year 11 Common Module – Reading to Write and Year 12 Module C – Craft of Writing, while also providing our students with the platform to compose and submit a creative writing piece for Term 1’s St Brigid’s Writing Challenge.

One of the key aspects of the unit – Reflective Writing – introduces our students to the concept of reviewing and critically thinking about their writing. We encourage the students to focus on a particular sentence, paragraph or even word-selection and consider why is something they were particularly pleased with, or how they utilised a language technique that established a particular effect within their writing. The unit also looks towards improving editing skills and being able to positively assess which parts of a piece might be unnecessary in relation to the overall piece.

The term assessment task encourages our students to plan and compose a piece and their choice of Discursive, Imaginative, or Persuasive texts. It has been pleasing to observe many of the students not ‘playing it safe’ and challenging themselves through composing their task a text type that is not their preferred style. Good luck to the Year 10 cohort as they work towards completing and submitting this task in Week 10.
