Safeguarding Through Connection: R U OK? Day
R U OK? Day reminds us that safeguarding is not only about policies, procedures, and responsibilities. It is also about creating a community where people feel safe, valued, connected, and supported. Sometimes, a simple conversation can make a significant difference, helping us recognise when someone may be struggling and ensuring they receive the support they need. By encouraging open and genuine communication, we strengthen our collective commitment to the wellbeing of every member of our community.
In schools, safeguarding involves being attentive to changes in a person’s behaviour, mood, attendance, engagement, or overall wellbeing. While we are not expected to have all the answers, we do have a responsibility to notice when something may not be right and to respond with care and compassion. Asking “Are you OK?” can open the door to a conversation that someone has been needing but may have been reluctant to start.
R U OK? Day also reminds us of the importance of listening without judgement. When people feel heard, respected, and supported, they are more likely to seek help and access the support available to them. Creating a culture where conversations about wellbeing are normal helps reduce stigma and encourages people to reach out before challenges become overwhelming.
As we recognise R U OK? Day, let us all play our part in fostering a safe and supportive community. Take a moment to check in with colleagues, students, friends, and family members. A genuine question, a listening ear, and a willingness to connect can have a lasting impact. Together, we can continue to build a community where everyone feels valued, supported, and safe to seek help when they need it.
