Attendance – Every Day Counts

Back

Establishing consistent routines and clear boundaries around school attendance plays a crucial role in supporting students’ academic success and wellbeing. When children know that school is a non-negotiable part of their daily life, it builds habits of responsibility, resilience, and organisation. Regular attendance helps students feel connected to their teachers and peers, making them more confident and engaged learners. Consistency also reduces anxiety, as children can rely on predictable patterns and expectations in their day-to-day lives.

It is important for families to be aware of how easily attendance can fall below the 90% threshold set by the NSW Government as acceptable. Missing just one day per fortnight over a school year results in an attendance rate below 90%, which means a student is absent for more than four weeks of learning. Occasional days off can quickly accumulate, particularly when combined with extended holidays during school terms or frequent partial absences. Many families are surprised by how small, seemingly manageable absences can have a significant overall impact on a child’s attendance record.

Under the NSW attendance requirements, schools are obligated to monitor attendance carefully and communicate with families when a student’s attendance falls below 90%, regardless of the reason, including absences due to illness, holidays, or other circumstances. While families may have valid reasons for absences, schools must still follow up and offer support to ensure students maintain consistent engagement with their learning. These communications are part of our shared responsibility to prioritise every child’s education and to work collaboratively with families.

Missing school can have a cumulative impact on learning, friendships, and overall development, as each day away means missed instruction, fewer opportunities to practise new skills, and gaps in understanding that can take time to rebuild. Over time, this may affect a child’s confidence, participation, and sense of achievement, and it can also make it harder to maintain friendships and feel connected within the school community. At the same time, we understand that there are occasions when illness or personal circumstances make regular attendance more difficult.

Please know that we are here to support our families with understanding and flexibility, and we value open communication. By working together, we can help ensure students stay connected to their learning while also navigating life’s challenges with care and support.
