Attendance: The Power of Excellent Attendance

Back

As parents, we all want the best for our children. We encourage them to work hard, persevere through challenges, build positive friendships, and make the most of every opportunity. One of the most important foundations for all of these goals is something that can often be overlooked: consistent attendance and punctuality.

Attending school every day, arriving on time, remaining at school for the full day, and being present and punctual for every lesson are all essential habits that support learning, wellbeing, and long-term success.

Learning Happens Every Day

Every school day matters. Lessons are carefully planned so that students build knowledge and skills over time. When students miss school, arrive late, or leave early, they can miss important explanations, discussions, practical activities, and opportunities to collaborate with their peers.

Even occasional absences can add up. Missing just one day per fortnight can equate to nearly a month of learning lost over the course of a school year. Gaps in learning can make it harder for students to keep up, affecting their confidence and engagement in the classroom.

Arriving on Time Sets the Tone

The start of the school day is an important part of establishing routines and preparing students for learning. Students who arrive late often miss key announcements, wellbeing check-ins, learning instructions, and valuable time to settle into the day.

Being on time helps students:

  • Begin the day feeling organised and prepared.
  • Reduce feelings of stress or anxiety.
  • Develop responsibility and independence.
  • Establish positive habits that will benefit them throughout life.

A calm and consistent morning routine at home can make a significant difference to a child’s readiness for school.

Staying for the Full Day Matters

Leaving school early may sometimes be unavoidable, but frequent early departures can result in students missing valuable learning opportunities. The final part of the school day is often used for consolidating learning, reflection, assessment tasks, collaborative activities, and important teacher feedback.

When possible, medical, dental, and other appointments should be scheduled outside school hours to minimise disruption to learning.

Every Lesson Counts

Attendance is not just about being present at school. It is also about being present in every class.

As students move through their timetabled day, each lesson becomes increasingly specialised, and missing even a single class can mean missing critical learning experiences. Encouraging your child to move promptly between classes, arrive prepared, and engage fully in every lesson helps maximise their learning time.

Attendance Builds More Than Academic Success

Excellent attendance supports much more than classroom achievement.

Students who attend regularly are more likely to:

  • Build strong friendships and social connections.
  • Develop confidence and resilience.
  • Feel a greater sense of belonging within the school community.
  • Participate in extracurricular opportunities.
  • Establish positive habits for future study and employment.

The habits students develop now often become the habits they carry into adulthood.

Parents Make the Difference

Research consistently shows that parents and caregivers have the greatest influence on children’s attitudes towards education and attendance. The messages children hear at home shape the importance they place on school.

Consider asking your child:

  • What are you looking forward to learning this week?
  • What goals are you working towards this term?
  • Is there anything making it difficult for you to come to school?
  • How can we work together to help you have excellent attendance?

These conversations communicate a powerful message: school matters, and your attendance matters.

Working Together

We understand that illness and unexpected circumstances will sometimes prevent students from attending school. When students are genuinely unwell, staying home is the right decision. However, we encourage all families to view attendance as a priority and to carefully consider the impact of avoidable absences, late arrivals, and early departures.

As a school community, we are committed to working alongside families to ensure every student has the opportunity to thrive. By prioritising attendance, punctuality, and engagement in every lesson, we help our children develop the habits, knowledge, and confidence they need for future success.

Remember:

Every day matters. Every lesson matters. Every minute matters. Together, we can help our children make the most of every opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed.
