Attendance, Wellbeing and R U OK? Day

Back

Regular school attendance plays an important role in supporting a student’s academic success, social connections, and overall wellbeing. Attending school consistently helps students build positive relationships with peers and trusted adults, develop a sense of belonging, and maintain routines that support healthy growth and development. When students are engaged in their learning and connected to their school community, they are more likely to thrive both academically and emotionally.

Sometimes, changes in attendance can be an early indicator that a student may be experiencing challenges with their mental health or wellbeing. Feelings of anxiety, stress, social difficulties, or other personal concerns can make it harder for students to attend school regularly. By paying attention to attendance patterns and approaching conversations with care and curiosity, schools and families can work together to better understand and respond to a student’s needs.

R U OK? Day reminds us of the power of a simple conversation. Asking a student, friend, colleague, or family member “Are you OK?” can open the door to meaningful support and connection. When someone is struggling, knowing that another person has noticed and genuinely cares can make a significant difference. Creating opportunities for open and respectful conversations helps foster a culture where people feel safe to seek help when they need it.

As a school community, we all have a role to play in supporting attendance and wellbeing. By encouraging regular attendance, staying connected, and checking in on one another, we help create an environment where every student feels valued, supported, and ready to learn. This R U OK? Day, let’s remember that sometimes the most important step is simply reaching out and starting a conversation.
