Year 9 Wee Jasper Camp
In what has become a much-loved tradition and flagship experience in Term Two at St Brigid’s Catholic College, Year 9 students recently participated in the Outdoor Learning Experience at Billy Grace Reserve. Located approximately two hours west of Canberra, Wee Jasper is a picturesque valley renowned for its natural beauty, fresh streams and impressive limestone caves.
Delivered in partnership with Australian Outdoor Education, the experience involved camping, abseiling, archery, bushcraft and caving, with students encouraged to challenge themselves and embrace new opportunities. Year 9 explored remarkable cave systems such as Punchbowl, Gong, Signature and Dog Leg, relying on teamwork, trust and encouragement as they navigated each unique challenge. Highlights included abseiling down towering cliffs over 30 metres high, squeezing through the narrow passages of Dog Leg, and enjoying the peaceful Riverwalk through the valley landscape.
A particularly memorable aspect of the experience was gathering around the campfire each evening. In many ways, the contrast of the cold nights and the warmth of the fire brought students together. During these quieter moments, students had valuable time to relax, strengthen relationships, connect with new peers, reconnect with old friends, and engage with staff in a different environment.
It was truly a rewarding week, with both staff and students sharing lasting memories. We’re sure this experience will continue to be a topic of conversation for years to come – stories of both challenge and achievement, all part of the adventure.
