By | Careers, News | No Comments

Have you ever considered a defence trade?

You can choose from a wide variety of trades in the Australian Defence Force (ADF) ranging from electronics, mechanics and carpentry to cooking and plumbing, and enjoy training, good pay, mateship and job security.

Some ADF trade jobs are similar to those found in the civilian world, but the work is likely to be more varied and rewarding. Others are unique to the military and will see you working with some of the most technically-advanced equipment and systems in the world. All come with a great salary from the day you start, comprehensive training, travel and amazing experiences.

You will receive world-class training in the ADF from trade experts and use the best available tools and equipment and work in modern, well-resourced facilities. Better still, students will have the opportunity to gain nationally-accredited qualifications that benefit them for life.

The Defence Jobs website is a valuable resource to ensure you have the most up-to-date information on ADF careers. We also have Navy, Army and Air Force Trade brochures. If you would like a copy of these, please reach out to your closest Defence Force Recruiting Centre. The Recruitment Process Overview (General Entry) explains the step-by-step journey and who may contact your students when they apply for a Defence trade.

Inflame Surf Lifesaving Bronze and Surf Rescue Certificate

During Term 4 the students have taken part in a program run through INFLAME on Wednesday’s to gain these awards. The community partnership between St Brigid’s and The Lakes Beach Surf Club continues to reap mutually beneficial rewards that we expect will grow even stronger in the years ahead.

It’s wonderful to watch the students gain in confidence and skills (surf, first aid, radio communications) and teamwork over this period of time. After the completion of the assessment, our College Captain Ben presented the new recruits with their red and yellow patrol caps. Ben also achieved his training officer’s certificate.
A big thank you to Johnny, Gary, Leanne, Amy and Greg for all their support, time and knowledge preparing our students and to our very own Paul N for his time and support of this program. Current students Harmony F and Trinity F also assisted the group, providing additional water safety and encouragement. A real team effort!
We wish all the newest members of Lakes Surf SLSC all the best over the school holidays on patrol and we appreciate in advance the service you provide to the community. Well done!

Urban Experience

Year 10

This outdoor experience has become an integral ‘rite of passage’ experience for St Brigid’s students in Year 10 as they transition from the junior years of their high school education. Students are challenged to move out of their comfort zone to participate in an extended urban experience that will contribute to the formation of resilient, adaptable and confident young men and women.

Through the Year 10 Urban Experience, students were provided with an authentic learning opportunity that requires them to plan and navigate their way around Sydney and fulfil a range of mission, education, leisure and future-focused activities.

Kind words – St Mary’s Cathedral

Kind words from a parishioner from St Mary’s Cathedral

Last week students from Year 10 attended an urban experience down in Sydney, we received some kind words regarding our students.

“To the Principal

I attended the 1:10pm Mass at St Mary’s Cathedral yesterday (Thursday), which I do on a regular basis, and a large contingent of students from St Brigid’s College were also in attendance.

You have every right to feel very proud of your students. Their attendance and participation in the liturgy was reverent and devout, and their manners were impeccable.

Congratulations to all your students on the dignity that they displayed yesterday. I wish them all the best in their studies and in their Christian faith journey.

I also wish you and your staff the very best in your educational mission. It is obvious from your students that you are making a significant difference in their lives.

God bless,

Parishioner

Harmony F (Year 10)

Today, I and three other students competed at the BBSSSA Surf Lifesaving carnival at Terrigal Beach. At the start of the day driving to the beach I was very nervous and scared. As we got to the beach, and I saw the surf it made me even more nervous and scared.

Lining up for my first event which was the swim I was doubting if I would even compete. As I returned to shore and had finished the race, I felt nothing but strength and pride in myself.

” I felt nothing but strength and pride in myself “

Going into the next race which was the board paddle I wasn’t even going to compete because of how nervous I was. Mr Nield with the help of other students and fellow competitors eventually talked me into doing the race. I am so grateful for the support he continuously provides for not just me but everyone else around.

At the end of the day Jack M (Year 10), Brayden H (Year 12), Kye M (Year 7) and I jumped in and competed in the Taplin Relay, which is a swim, a run, a board paddle and another run. Even though we weren’t competing for a place as we were a mixed team, we were determined to do our best. Without the help and support from both Mrs McFadden and Mr Nield, who were so proud of us all, we could not have made today so great.

The team would like to acknowledge and thank Lakes Surf Lifesaving Club for their on-going support and development of our students. We appreciate the boards that were provided for us to paddle.

– Harmony F (Year 10)

It was great to see the students grow in confidence and enter many events throughout the day. Congratulations to our small but big-hearted surf lifesaving team – Team Managers

Year 8 Ambassadors Tackle Climate Change

Year 8 Ambassadors Tackle Climate Change

Last Thursday, selected Year 8 students travelled to Newcastle University to work with our partners High Resolves on a climate change simulation game

This was a fantastic opportunity to gain a valuable insight into the recent Cop27 meeting of world leaders, as students were paired to become ambassadors of a variety of countries around the globe.

Their task was to minimise the economic impact on their own countries, whilst negotiating to secure commitment for change with other countries. This was a valuable lesson in collaboration, communication and the benefits of working for the common good. In addition, students experienced the breadth, diversity and dimension of a large university campus – Callaghan, Newcastle University. Our guides Frank and Catarina did a wonderful job of explaining university life and opportunities.

Not only did the students represent their countries with vigour and determination, but their behaviour was also exemplary. The group received positive comments from Rachel Jackett – High Resolves, dining hall staff and even our Coastaliner coach driver, who said, “I’d gladly take this group anywhere, anytime.”

A vote of thanks to staff member Chelsea Read for organising such a great experience. Thanks also to Sister Josie, Georgia Adams (Wallace), Liz Farrugia and Paul Nield, who accompanied the group on the day.

High Resolves is planning to continue this event in future and expand it for Years 8, 9 and 10. St Brigid’s Catholic College was the first group to be offered this ‘Pathways and Partnerships’ experience.
