Most improved on the Central Coast

Welcome to the final edition of Spark for the year, we hope you enjoy these articles from the past two weeks. It is with great pride that we share the achievements St Brigid’s has made over the past five years. We have received the highest improvement in NAPLAN on the Central Coast thanks to the hard work and dedication of our staff and students. We continue to engage in a wide range of events and activities including sports and community engagement opportunities. The Alumni Brunch held this week was a real highlight with former Socceroos Captain Paul Wade motivating and inspiring our students. We also thank our Alumni Panel guest speakers who returned to share their advice and answered questions to encourage our future graduates. Last Friday we held the Year 7 Orientation day to give our 2023 cohort a taste of what is to come, and we look forward to having them officially commence at the beginning of next year. We will share photos from the day and the Year 10 Urban Experience Excursion held this week in the Illuminate Magazine at the end of Term 4. Finally, I am pleased to share photos from our recent Awards Assembly, well done to you all.

God bless you and your families.

NAPLAN most improved on the Central Coast

By | News | No Comments
On Monday afternoon, Central Coast Advocate interviewed our College Principal, Adam Murdoch, for an article entitled “NAPLAN: Central Coast schools that have improved the most in five years.”
Our NAPLAN growth over the last five years is the highest of all Central Coast secondary schools. We are very proud of our students and grateful for the hard work of our teachers, which has led to this improvement.
Here are some extracts from the article:
“Meanwhile, St Brigid’s Catholic College in Lake Munmorah recorded the biggest improvement for a secondary school with average year 9 NAPLAN results increasing by 3.23 per cent over the past five years of NAPLAN.
St Brigid’s Catholic College Principal Adam Murdoch said anecdotally the Lake Munmorah school knew literacy was an area where it could significantly improve.
“Using a range of data sources, including NAPLAN, we validated the key areas of literacy we wanted to focus on,” he said.
“The growth is a result of clearly and honestly naming the area of improvement with the whole school community and working together toward the desired improvement. This transparency was significant and created buy-in, and accountability.”
As a result, Mr Murdoch said the school implemented dedicated literacy lessons in Years 7 to 10.
“It was important that our strategies were data driven, and measured for effectiveness,” he said.”
Congratulations to our College community.

Managing Screen Time

By | News | No Comments

In this edition of SchoolTV – MANAGING SCREEN TIME

As a result of the global pandemic, there has been a noticeable shift in the amount of time people spend on screen-based devices. Families are transitioning back to pre-COVID routines but many are still struggling to re-establish the boundaries and rules around screen use. Some continue to deal with digital conflict and tech-tantrums on a daily basis. The latest research found that 77% of teenagers spend more than five hours on screens per day, but it is important to note that not all screen time is considered equal.

Parents play a crucial role in modelling a positive and healthy approach to using screens and assisting children to navigate the content they watch. It is better to model and mentor screen use, rather than monitor it. Children tend to do more of what they see us do, and less of what we tell them to do. However, it is still important to outline the risks and highlight the benefits of screen use to ensure you keep a balanced attitude. Encourage discussions around the issues that people experience in monitoring their screen time and be honest about your own difficulties.

Parents need to remain firm in their approach to managing screen time. Excessive screen time can be detrimental to a child’s overall wellbeing. Ensuring the correct privacy settings are in place is vital to prevent children from being inadvertently exposed to inappropriate content or online predators. Parents need to also be mindful of the potential impact screen time can have on a child’s social, emotional, educational, behavioural, and even physical domains.

In this edition of SchoolTV, care-givers will be provided with a range of guidelines and strategies to help manage screen time at home.

We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this edition of SchoolTV and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the school counsellor for further information or seek medical or professional help.

St Brigid’s Alumni Brunch

By | News | No Comments

St Brigid’s Catholic College and the Pathways & Partnerships team proudly held the first Alumni Event on Wednesday, 23rd of November 2022. We were joined by 5 guest speakers, which included 4 past students. Firstly, former Socceroos Captain Paul Wade spoke; he motivated us all with his life experiences, both personal and whilst playing for the Socceroos. His genuine passion for life, learning, and never giving up was inspiring and left us all with a drive to do our best and try anything. Then Lara McCulkin, Natasha Hawkshaw, Bella Hodge and Taylah Gorton formed a panel of Alumni Students, and Principal Adam Murdoch asked the group several questions. I was so impressed by how well the young ladies spoke about their own experiences at St Brigid’s and how much they enjoyed their time here. They were passionate about their place here at St Brigid’s and their amazing teachers that supported them in their journey. They gave our year 10 and Year 11/12 students tips on how best to survive those pivotal years of study whilst looking after their own wellbeing. Well done to the St Brigid’s team for growing such wonderful and inspiring students. We are looking forward to many more Alumni events to celebrate our College, students past and present, parents/family, teachers, and support staff.

NRL Roosters Shield League Tag Gala Day

By | News | No Comments

On Wednesday the 30 November Mrs Beisler and Mr Barnett took our Senior and Junior League Tag teams to participate in the NRL Roosters Shield League Tag Gala Day.
All the girls played amazingly and had a great day out in the sunshine. Our Senior Team placed 2nd in their Pool and 3rd overall. Our Junior team had some close games, narrowly missing out on finals. All the girls should be commended on their outstanding performance, sportsmanship and pride in representing our College. Well done Girls!

Forging ahead in all areas

We are pleased to share some heartwarming stories and achievements since our last edition. Our students continue participating in varied Inflame activities, including the Raw Challenge, Bubble Soccer, and Paddle Board Beach Rescue. In Sports News, Sienna Thomas was named the Team Captain of the winning NSW Under 15’s Touch Football Team. Our CAPA students performed in the showcase ‘A Century of Entertainment’ held at St Brendan’s Catholic Primary School. The evening demonstrated the immense talent that we have at our school and I would like to congratulate everyone involved.

Mrs Adamson and our stage 5 students successfully incubated chickens in Agriculture and have begun working on the new larger agriculture space for 2023. Our student leaders participated in a video and voice recording to promote the College, which we hope to release via our website and phone lines in the coming weeks. Thank you to our community for continuing to support these activities.

The recent launch of School TV as a wellbeing resource for staff, parents and caregivers has had many views. We encourage you to read the latest edition on bullying included in this edition of Spark and browse through the other valuable topics.

We are confident you will enjoy this small snapshot of the last two weeks at St Brigid’s to stay informed of our College activities in the lead-up to the release of our Illuminate Magazine at the end of the Term.

God bless you and your families.

This month on SchoolTV – Bullying

By | News | No Comments

Bullying is an ongoing or repeated misuse of power in relationships, with the intention to cause deliberate psychological harm. Bullying behaviours can be verbal, physical or social. It can happen in person or online, via various digital platforms and devices and it can be obvious or hidden. Bullying in any form or for any reason can have immediate, medium and long-term effects on those involved, including bystanders.

Despite the efforts made to reduce bullying behaviours, the research tells us that one in four students still report being bullied every few weeks. However, not all negative behaviour should be considered bullying. The key difference is that bullying does not stop on its own. It’s important young people learn how to identify behaviours that are rude, behaviours that are mean, and behaviours that are related to bullying.

Often the reasons for bullying can be complex. Some young people do it to get approval from others, some do it to regain control, whilst others may do it because it makes them feel safe. Supporting young people as they work through their emotions will help them unpack the motivation and reason behind the behaviour.

In this edition of SchoolTV, caregivers can better understand why some young people engage in bullying behaviours and what to do to support a child experiencing it. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this month’s edition, and we always welcome your feedback.

If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help.
